The Houston Energy defeated in-state rival Dallas Elite Mustangs 41-22 in their final home game of the season at Wolverine Stadium on Saturday, May 18. A strong defensive showing that forced 5 turnovers left the Mustang offense reeling all night. Safety Dani Spearman led the way with 3 interceptions including a 39-yard pick-six in the 4th quarter.
Dallas opened the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive to take a 6-0 lead. Houston would then respond with 21 unanswered points thanks to a rushing touchdown from Brook Wilson and 2 more from Dominique McDougle.
The Mustangs would answer with a 1-yard touchdown run right before the half, and the Energy would take a 21-14 lead into the locker room.
Amirra “Rocket” Parker would start the second half fireworks by taking the kickoff 69-yards for a touchdown. Dallas would answer with a touchdown of their own, and their successful 2-point attempt set the score at 28-22. Kelsey West would come up with a key interception in the end zone to stop the Mustangs from taking their second lead of the night.
The Energy would go on to dominate the final 15 minutes. Suzie Garrett would find pay dirt from 1-yard out, and Spearman would ice things over with a show-stopping pick-six. The defense would also record 3 sacks in the period, 2 from Tori Elmore and another from Kendrea “Woo” Hampton. Shannon “Hammerhead” Foreman would recover a fumble before the final whistle.
After improving to 3-1 on the season, Houston will have a bye week before traveling to Los Angeles, California to take on conference opponent Cali War at Cathedral High School on Saturday, June 1. This game will be featured as one of the WFA’s “Games of the Week” and will be broadcast on one of their partnering networks.
