The Houston Energy fell short of the Cali War 32-22 in a road matchup on Saturday, June 1 at Cathedral High School. Despite a strong rushing attack, led by a 99-yard effort from Brook Wilson, and a Kelsey West pick-six, Houston was unable to leave California with a victory.
Cali jumped to a 8-0 lead with a pick-six and a successful 2-point attempt. The Energy would respond with a long drive capped with a 9-yard touchdown run from Ashley Robinson. The unsuccessful 2-point attempt cut the score 8-6.
West would then flip the script of the game with less than a minute left in the half when she intercepted the War quarterback and took it 42-yards to the house. A successful 2-point completion from Carol Maresh to Mars Allen gave the Energy a 14-8 halftime lead.
Cali would take nearly 8-minutes off the clock to start the half on a methodical scoring drive to retake the lead 16-14. Houston would respond with a long drive of their own capped by a 9-yard rushing touchdown from Wilson. Maresh would complete the 2-point to Wilson to put the Energy up 22-16.
However, Cali would take the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. Another successful conversion gave them a 24-22 lead.
The Energy would begin to mount a strong drive but failed to convert a 4th and 1 at about the 7-minute mark in the fourth quarter. Cali then ran the clock down to under 2-minutes and delivered a dagger in the form of another rushing touchdown and successful 2-point conversion.
Sonique Middleton added a fumble recovery in the second quarter to add to the onslaught of turnovers forced by the Energy defense this year.
The Energy will take on the Austin Outlaws in Austin, Texas at House Park Stadium on Saturday, June 15 in their final game of the season. The look to cap their campaign with a victory and earn a playoff berth. Check the website for playoff information on Monday, June 17.
